Seymour Simon at his reliable best — stunning Smithsonian photography paired with prose that is clear, accurate, and appropriately scaled for young readers. It covers species differences, behavior, social structure, and conservation pressure without talking down to its audience. Some of the conservation statistics will have shifted since 2009, but as a gateway nonfiction title for elementary readers this remains one of the better choices on the shelf.
