Richard Chase spent years gathering these Appalachian folk tales from living storytellers, and that care shows on every page — the mountain speech, the humor, and the warmth of the oral tradition are all preserved with obvious love. It has been continuously in print since 1948 for a reason: this is a book that earns its place at the family table and in the classroom. Academic folklorists quibble about Chase's editorial touch, but for family reading it is simply a treasure.
