Carolyn Reeder gives young readers something rare in middle-grade historical fiction: genuine moral complexity. Grandpa's stubborn fight against the government's takeover of his Blue Ridge farm is sympathetic and maddening in equal measure, and Carrie's torn loyalty is exactly the kind of emotional tension that makes kids think. The Shenandoah National Park history is woven in naturally, not lectured. A worthy, thoughtful novel for the 8–12 set.
