Guys from Space

Pinkwater's deadpan matter-of-factness — the boy asks his mother first, she says yes, they go to space and find talking rocks and root beer — is funnier than almost anything that tries harder, and the short declarative sentences make this a genuinely confidence-building read for early independents. The plot is essentially nothing, but that's the joke, and it lands. A lovely complement to more structured early readers.
