Help is on the Way

This slim Level 1 reader does exactly what it's designed to do: give kindergarteners a satisfying, manageable story with vocabulary they can actually handle on their own. Jessie's dog Bear goes missing in LEGO City, and a team of community helpers — police officers, firefighters, and more — pitches in to find him. The LEGO City setting gives kids who already play with the toy line a built-in reason to care, and the teamwork message is simple and positive. The honest caveat is that this is branded content first and a story second — the plot is thin and the characters are functional rather than memorable. But for a child working on reading independence, thin and manageable is exactly right.
