First Second Books consistently produces nonfiction graphic novels that take young readers seriously, and the History Comics series is a strong example: rigorous research, multiple perspectives, and storytelling that makes history feel alive rather than like a worksheet. The Roanoke Colony entry in particular benefits from giving Native American figures like Manteo and Wanchese genuine narrative weight. Individual volumes vary a bit depending on the creative team, but the series as a whole is one of the better nonfiction options for reluctant middle-grade readers.
