But modern readers — including children — will need significant adult guidance to navigate the plantation setting and period racial attitudes, and Elsie's extreme passivity and near-constant weeping frustrate even sympathetic readers. A literary-historical artifact worth knowing, but not an easy or uncomplicated read for most families today.
