The Lucy Crane translation paired with Walter Crane's 114 illustrations is genuinely one of the great Victorian editions of the Grimm tales, and the Dover reprint keeps it accessible. This is the real Grimm — dark, morally uncompromising, and unflinching — not the softened modern versions, which makes it exactly right for older children, adults, and collectors and exactly wrong for parents expecting a gentle bedtime book for young kids. Know what you're picking up and it's a landmark.
