It's Snowing! It's Snowing!
Jack Prelutsky was the first U.S. Children's Poet Laureate, and this collection shows why he earned that trust — the verse is genuinely funny, rhythmically sure, and calibrated for young readers without talking down to them. The 2006 I Can Read reissue with Yossi Abolafia's illustrations makes the collection accessible to early readers still building fluency, and the large-type format with generous white space is a thoughtful design choice for that audience. Sixteen poems following a boy and his dog through winter adventures, from snowball fights to skating to watching the snowman melt, gives the collection a light narrative thread across what is otherwise a pleasant miscellany. The wistful final image — snowman reduced to hat and carrot — introduces a mild note of transience that is fine for most young readers but may land oddly on the very youngest. A warm, reliable winter poetry entry point.
