Powell is a genuinely underappreciated figure — lost his arm at Shiloh and then rowed the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon — and Maynard's treatment is respectful toward the Indigenous cultures Powell encountered, which is not a given in older educational series. The format is very short and there are no critical reviews, but for a classroom unit on Western exploration this is a solid, curriculum-aligned choice.
