Luis's First Day does what it sets out to do — reassure anxious kindergarteners with a relatable scenario and a supportive dad — but it does it in the most formulaic way possible. The vocabulary is appropriately simple and the father-child dynamic is genuinely warm, but the illustrations and story lack the spark that makes the best picture books memorable. Functional, not essential.
