Mac & Cheese

James Proimos III, Jr. · 2016
68/100
👍 Worth It

Mac is a macaroni noodle in a necktie. Cheese is an orange cube with a snaggletooth. Together they navigate three short stories — a morning walk, an afternoon art debate, and an evening of stargazing — in the warm odd-couple tradition of Frog and Toad. The bold, expressive illustrations are the real draw here, and the puns land often enough to make this a lively read-aloud for the four-to-seven crowd. The honest caveat: the book openly dedicates itself to Arnold Lobel and James Marshall, which invites a comparison it cannot quite win — the story resolutions are soft and occasionally shrug where those classics would find something true. Still, the friendship at the center is genuine, and the silliness is clean as a whistle. Worth a lap-read.
