Carol Greene's slim Rookie Biography does the job it is designed for — putting Dr. King's life into sentences a six-year-old can read — but the 1989 publication date means the scholarship is four decades old and the treatment is necessarily thin. It is a fine classroom starter but not the richer biography a curious child deserves. Newer, more layered MLK picture books have largely superseded it.
