Meg Rosoff's McTavish series is exactly the kind of quietly brilliant chapter-book fiction that early readers deserve — warm, witty, and emotionally intelligent without being sentimental. Book 4 handles the very real anxiety of a school move with a light hand and a dog who understands more than any adult gives him credit for. Best appreciated after the earlier installments, but delightful on its own terms.
