My Gran The Gorilla
Jackie French, the 2014-2015 Australian Children's Laureate, delivers fast-paced absurdist comedy in this sixth Wacky Families installment. TJ's grandmother has hairy arms, a banana obsession, and a habit of attracting wombat poachers β and when TJ's cool new friend Linda starts to notice, the stakes feel very real to a kid who just wants Gran to be accepted. The resolution involves everyone working together, including a Giant Skateboarding Slug named Egbert, which tells you exactly what kind of book this is. The appeal for reluctant early chapter-book readers is real: short, funny, ridiculous in the best way, and underneath the chaos there's a genuine message about accepting family members who don't fit the mold. Caveat: no independent critical reviews were found for this specific title, and availability outside Australia is limited.
