Kay Winters had a clever structural idea and executed it with wit and warmth: Oliver writes a letter nominating his teacher for president, and each classroom responsibility — managing competing needs, maintaining the environment, listening to everyone — maps neatly onto what a president actually does. School Library Journal praised the parallels as both humorous and pithy, and Kirkus Reviews highlighted how inventively the conceit works. Denise Brunkus's cheerful cartoon illustrations keep the energy light. The civics content is genuinely accessible for kindergarten through second grade, and the book has found a natural home as an election-season classroom read-aloud. No partisan content — just a celebration of public service and community responsibility that works equally well across the political spectrum. The honest caveat is that the central conceit carries the whole book; outside of an election or civics unit, the repeat-read appeal is limited. But in that context, it earns its place.
