This one earns its place on the shelf. National Geographic photography is the obvious draw, but Catherine Hughes's background in wildlife biology and early childhood development means the text is calibrated beautifully — not too much, not too little, with an emotional hook around how animal parents care for young that helps small children connect. It launched an entire series, which tells you everything about how well it landed with families and libraries.
