SpongeBob chapter books occupy a real and useful niche — they bring reluctant or transitional readers to chapter-book format through characters they already love — and this adaptation of one of the show's better episodes handles friendship, manipulation, and reconciliation with the same absurdist warmth the cartoon is known for. The black-and-white illustrations are a legitimate disappointment for fans expecting the show's color, but the writing holds up and the moral lands cleanly.
