The dog-camp setting is a genuinely appealing hook for animal-loving early readers, and the accessible length and pacing do what franchise chapter books are supposed to do — get kids reading. But outside the Olsen brand bubble the story offers little that a dozen other early mysteries do not do better. Formula plotting and franchise dependence keep it in mixed territory.
