Coville knows how to build genuine dread in a short space — 'Duffy's Jacket' in particular is the kind of story that sticks — and this collection usefully bridges the gap between Goosebumps and richer dark fiction. The unevenness is real and some stories are more earnest than effective, but for a kid ready for something with more weight than entry-level horror it earns a place on the shelf. Parents who restrict supernatural content should note the vampire blood ritual.
