One Word Pearl

Nicole Groeneweg · 2013
91/100
👍 Worth It

Pearl loves words so much she collects them — so when most of her words are blown away and she must choose each remaining one with great care, the loss is immediate and felt. Nicole Groeneweg's premise is imaginative and the lesson it carries — that words have weight and deserve to be chosen thoughtfully — lands gently and memorably for young readers. Hazel Mitchell's illustrations bring warmth to the whimsy. This one won the NAESP Children's Book Competition, which speaks to its reception in educational settings where language arts teachers will find it especially useful. The honest caveat is that the story is thin around the central metaphor, and children who like narrative drive may want more plot. But as a conversation-starter about language, it is genuinely lovely.
