Paradise Lost

Milton's 17th-century epic retells the Fall of Man in twelve books of blank verse, following Satan's rebellion, his temptation of Adam and Eve, and their expulsion from Eden — all in service of Milton's stated aim to justify God's ways to humanity. The theological and philosophical depth here is genuinely unmatched in English poetry, and the treatment of pride, disobedience, and repentance is grounded squarely in Scripture. That said, this is demanding reading: the archaic diction is dense, the verse structure is unrelenting, and Satan's portrayal carries a magnetic complexity that some Christian readers find theologically uncomfortable. Best approached with a good guide or study edition. For patient, mature readers willing to do the work, it rewards like almost nothing else in the language.
