Pirate Campout
Captain Hook trades his pirate ship for a camping trip with Jake and his crew, discovers that terrorizing Neverland does not translate to wilderness skills, and ends up learning a few things from the younger pirates. That is about the whole of it β and for the four-to-eight crowd, that is exactly enough. This Disney World of Reading Level 1 early reader does what it is designed to do: put familiar, beloved characters on the page with simple vocabulary that beginning readers can actually get through on their own. The content is entirely safe, Hook is bumbling and funny rather than frightening, and the themes of teamwork and humility land gently. The honest note is that outside of early literacy practice and love of the Disney Junior show, there is not much here that will stick. A fine tool for building reading confidence, not a book that aspires beyond that.
