Haugaard's prose is so convincingly rooted in the Irish folktale tradition that Publishers Weekly had to note it could pass for an authentic folktale, and Julie Downing's Pre-Raphaelite watercolors are genuinely beautiful — that is a rare combination in picture books. The plot is simple by design, as all good folktales are, and the inner-worth-over-outward-status theme lands warmly and without preachiness. A lovely family read-aloud that deserves more visibility than its 1987 publication date has given it.
