The cat-mermaid concept is charming and the friendship and empathy themes are handled with enough care to give a 6-to-9-year-old something to think about alongside the adventure. Holly Linneman's series-consistent narration keeps the tone playful and reassuring across a manageable 53-minute runtime. That said, this is the twelfth book in a formula-driven series, and even loyal readers will find themselves waiting for a surprise that never comes — it is a comfortable listen, not a memorable one.
