Clare Bell's final volume in the Books of the Named series is a fully realized conclusion to a remarkable saga — the non-human perspective is sustained with discipline, and Ratha's internal reckoning with her own capacity for harm gives the book genuine moral depth rather than just action. Reviewers who call it the best in the series are credible; the decades-long gap between volumes didn't diminish the craft. New readers should start at Book 1, but this series deserves far wider recognition than its indie publishing history has allowed.
