👍 Worth It

Kirkus compared this debut to the Little House tradition, and the comparison holds — Callie is a resilient, warm protagonist who carries the reader through death, epidemic, abandonment, and hardship without the story ever feeling grim for its own sake. The 1909 Indiana setting is richly handled, and Opa's fumbling English provides genuine warmth and humor. Parents of sensitive younger readers should know the emotional weight is real, but for the right middle-grader this is a quietly excellent historical novel.
