Children's ✦ Penny’s Take
Robert E. Lee
Emory M. Thomas · 2000
78/100
👍 Worth It
Thomas's biography drew serious praise from the New York Review of Books and Kirkus for good reason — primary-source-driven, psychologically honest, and genuinely balanced between hagiography and revisionism for its moment. Catalogued under Children's, which is simply wrong; this is adult scholarly biography and should be shelved and marketed accordingly. Assessments of Lee have continued to evolve since 1995 and some readers will want a more critical contemporary framing, but as a piece of historical biography craft it holds up.
