Robot Commando
Steve Jackson's 1986 Fighting Fantasy entry swaps the series' usual swords-and-sorcery for a science-fiction premise: you are a dinosaur rancher on an alien planet, everyone around you has been put to sleep by a biological weapon, and you must pilot a series of giant robots to repel the invaders. That genre shift alone gives Robot Commando a refreshing feel within the series, and the sandbox structure with multiple routes genuinely rewards replay. The honest caveat: devoted Fighting Fantasy fans tend to find the difficulty notably lower than the series standard, which reduces the tension that makes the best entries memorable. The core combat mechanics are also essentially unchanged from the fantasy installments despite the setting shift. Strong for newcomers or younger readers; veterans may find it a little easy.
