👍 Worth It

National Geographic's production values and George Mobley's photography carry this one — taking an 8-to-13-year-old through Botswana, the Galapagos, Mongolia, and the Amazon in one volume is an ambitious and largely successful nonfiction experience. The 1982 date is a real caveat: some indigenous cultural depictions will need conversation, and environmental data has shifted. But as an introduction to the sheer variety of the natural world, it still earns its shelf space.
