Children's ✦ Penny’s Take
Salt to the Sea
Ruta Sepetys · 2016
82/100
👍 Worth It
Ruta Sepetys does something remarkable here — she takes the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster, one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in history and one most people have never heard of, and makes it intimate and urgent through four very human voices. The Carnegie Medal it earned is one of the most respected honors in children's and YA literature, and it's deserved. Be aware the wartime content is genuinely intense — child death, drowning, and a pregnant teen who survived rape — but it's handled with historical honesty rather than shock value.
