Fenske's Crabby series has earned its place in early-reader classrooms for good reason — the wordplay is legitimately clever, the comic-panel format keeps young eyes moving forward, and Crabby's grumpy resistance to learning is exactly the kind of joke that makes kids feel seen. The humor gets repetitive across the series, and any single volume is thin on plot, but as a phonics-friendly laugh machine for pre-K through Grade 1, it does exactly what it promises.
