Nearly five decades of classroom favorites signal real durability, and Sachar's absurdist comedy is sophisticated enough to delight adults while landing perfectly for the 6–10 set. The deliberate incoherence is part of the charm, but at just over two hours the work is short — many listeners will finish wanting significantly more. Sachar narrating his own material brings instinctive comedic timing; an earlier Lionel Wilson edition is also praised, so either version delivers.
