Sonya's Family
Sonya's Family is a PreK through Grade 1 leveled reader that follows a girl whose parents are divorced and who moves between two households and a large extended family. Elliot Riley's approach is matter-of-fact and warm β the book presents Sonya's family as something real and full of love rather than a problem to be explained. Srimalie Bassani's illustrations and the classroom scaffolding (vocabulary, glossary, teaching tips) make it a practical social-emotional learning tool. The honest caveat: faith families with strong convictions about divorce will want to preview and may want to supplement with conversation, since the book normalizes the family structure without comment. As a leveled reader it offers minimal narrative depth β it is a classroom tool first. Within that purpose, it does its job with warmth.
