As a historical artifact Farrar's novel is genuinely significant — it helped establish the school-story genre that eventually produced better-known classics. But Victorian prose, corporal punishment depicted without modern framing, and very little contemporary readership make this a specialized interest. Literary historians and classical Christian fiction readers have real reason to seek it out; general readers probably don't.
