Vansant's period-accurate art and commitment to the emotional arc of the original make this a legitimate entry point for reluctant readers who would never pick up Crane's prose. The visual depiction of battle deaths hits harder than text for sensitive younger readers, and the format cannot recover the stream-of-consciousness interiority that makes the novel actually great. Worth it as a gateway; not a replacement.
