Chitra Soundar has assembled a genuinely diverse collection that reaches well beyond the usual European heroic canon, and the stories are written with warmth and appropriate age-calibration. The anthology format keeps individual entries brief, so depth is limited, and parents with strict objections to Hindu mythology or non-Christian religious figures should preview. For most families, though, this is a positive, broadening read for the eight-to-twelve set.
