Superman and the Mayhem of Metallo does its job cleanly: a beginning reader gets a fast, simple superhero adventure with Batman as a bonus, wrapped in the HarperFestival brand reliability that parents trust. There is no literary ambition here and the plot is thin by design, but for a 5-to-8-year-old taking their first solo reading steps with a beloved character, that is exactly what the format calls for.
