Padma Venkatraman's novel is one of the more honest and compassionate portrayals of child homelessness in middle-grade fiction, and the second-person narrative addressed to Rukku gives it a structural tenderness that matches the emotional stakes. It does not flinch from the hard realities of poverty and abuse, so parents of younger or more sensitive readers should preview it first. For the right reader it is genuinely moving and deserves its starred review.
