Gaiman and Grimly have made something genuinely inventive — an alphabet book that subverts the format on purpose, hides an error for sharp eyes to find, and pairs the text with illustrations so dark and detailed they demand a second look. It is not for young children regardless of what the publisher's age range says, and it is not actually useful for learning the alphabet. For older kids and adults who love gothic whimsy, it is a distinct and well-crafted object.
