The Denslow Picture Book Treasury

W. W. Denslow illustrated the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and this Dover treasury collects nine of his 1903–1904 picture books — Humpty Dumpty, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and more — with high-quality color reproductions and a scholarly introduction by Oz historian Michael Patrick Hearn. It's a landmark in the history of the American picture book, and Denslow deliberately softened the harsher folk-tale elements for his era, making these retellings unusually mild. The honest caveat is that this is more a historical and visual artifact than a story-driven read: the illustration style will feel dated to kids raised on contemporary picture books, and nine of the original eighteen titles may leave collectors wanting more.
