DeVito's textbook is competent, comprehensive, and sustained adoption across American college programs speaks to genuine usefulness in the classroom. But this is a functional academic text, not a book anyone picks up for pleasure, and the multi-edition proliferation means you need to know which edition you actually have. For a college public speaking course it earns its place on the syllabus; as a general read it does not.
