The Friendship Pact

Susan Beth Pfeffer's 1986 middle-grade novel follows twelve-year-old best friends Tracy and Andrea, devoted fans of pop idol Ross 'Rabbit' Pearlman, who make a solemn pact to meet him together or not at all. When Tracy turns down a private meeting to honor their promise and then discovers Andrea broke the pact for herself, the friendship fractures — and eventually heals. Pfeffer keeps the emotional dynamics grounded and recognizable for the preteen audience she is writing for: the jealousy, the betrayal, and the slow forgiveness all feel true. The honest caveat: the coincidence that gives Tracy her own encounter with Rabbit at the end is a stretch, and the celebrity-idol framing is very much a product of the 1980s. Neither issue undermines what the book does well — a constructive, age-appropriate story about keeping commitments and repairing friendships after a real rupture.
