A serviceable controlled-vocabulary retelling of The Ugly Duckling that does its job for the earliest readers, especially with the built-in phonics support materials for educators. As a reading experience, though, Andersen's emotional core gets so simplified it mostly disappears. Fine for a classroom kit, but not a book you would choose to read aloud for its own sake.
