Gidwitz sticks the landing on this trilogy closer — the metafictional trip to Brooklyn is inventive, the sibling bond carries genuine emotional weight, and the reimagined Grimm material is handled with real craft. Violence is significant (decapitations, a visit to hell) so parents of younger or sensitive readers should know what they're handing over, but for the right 10-to-14-year-old this is exactly the kind of book that turns reluctant readers into dedicated ones.
