The Gruffalo

Julia Donaldson
82/100
👍 Worth It

A mouse walks through a dark wood, invents an imaginary monster to frighten off predators, and then discovers the monster is real — which means the mouse now has to be clever enough to outsmart it. Julia Donaldson's rhyming couplets are a genuine pleasure to read aloud, the logic of the mouse's solution is satisfying even for young children to follow, and Axel Scheffler's illustrations make the Gruffalo look fearsome and funny in equal measure. Eighteen million copies sold across multiple languages, awards from the Nestlé Smarties Prize to the Blue Peter Award, and an Academy Award-nominated animated film speak for themselves. The content is entirely family-safe — the predator-prey framing resolves safely and with humor. Very sensitive toddlers may need a beat to warm up to the Gruffalo's look, but for most children ages three to seven this is exactly the kind of book that makes reading feel like something worth wanting.
