One of the cleanest and funniest of the Grimm tales — the hedgehog's ruse works as pure comedy, the moral about cleverness over arrogance lands immediately, and the repetitive structure makes it ideal for read-alouds. Parents may want to briefly discuss the trick-as-strategy, but that conversation is easier here than in darker Grimm fare. The 2020 illustrated edition reportedly brings expressive modern artwork to an underappreciated classic.
