As a 1996 school reference, this does what it's designed to do — walk students through medicine's history from ancient anatomy to late-twentieth-century breakthroughs — but three decades of medical progress are simply missing, and that's a serious gap for any reader trying to learn about a field that has transformed since publication. It may still serve as an introduction to pre-2000 history if paired with current sources, but as a standalone recommendation it's showing its age too clearly.
