The History of Modern China

For a 2006 school library purchase this was a solid overview — the sweep from empire through Communist Revolution to late-twentieth-century economic reform is well-structured for a student audience, and the educational series format provides reliable scaffolding. But China's transformation since 2006 is enormous, and a young-adult reader using this for research today will hit a wall roughly twenty years before the present. Worth using for historical context on the Communist period, but it needs supplementing for anything contemporary.
