A genuine gem from 1956 that doesn't feel old at all — Duvoisin weaves a painless, joyful lesson in color theory right into the heart of a family story about compromise and creativity. The NYRB reissue was well earned. It's brief, but what's there is elegant and the illustrations still pop.
